Israel’s War on Gaza Is a War on Children

It is almost impossible to grasp what is happening to the children of Gaza. Displaced and forced to move from one end of Gaza to the other. Bombs and missiles exploding around them and being the direct target of rifle fire. Many, now bereft of all family, find themselves either caring for younger siblings, or in the care of strangers. There is no quiet; no safe place, no food or clean water, and no warm clothing to protect from the cold. Children now need hearing aids because of exposure to constant explosions. Is it any wonder that their affect range from rage to crushing depression? Will we see children taking their lives as we have seen in other situations where children have been ripped from their lives and culture?

A Manifesto Against For-Profit Health Insurance Companies — by Michael Moore

Editor's Note
As I used to tell my students, the answer to a problem lies in how you frame the problem. Michel Moore demonstrates this beautifully in this discussion of the healthcare system and the recent assassination of the CEO of United Health. We are programmed and reprogrammed to blame certain people for problems and/or certain people as problems. This programming is reinforced with each tragedy, and anyone in the mainstream media (or their pundits) rarely breaks from the approved script. This is true again with trying to figure out why Mangione (an unlikely terrorist by all accounts) committed this horrendous act.

We live in an age of increased disasters and encroaching fascism. This is a historical moment marked by a systemic attempt by an emerging authoritarianism to disable language and dissent of any substantive meaning, remove actions from the grammar of moral witnessing, and disassociate power from institutional justice. As all levels of society are hollowed out, notions of democratic community, the social contract, and compassion give way to a politics in which all matters of responsibility are individualized, privatized, and removed from broader systemic considerations. The habits of oligarchy are animated by fear and reproduced through relentless attacks on human possibilities, while “the disorder of real history is replaced by the orderliness of pseudo-history.”[1] In a time of widespread suffering and unrest, higher education is feared for its critical functions, and students are expected to be silent, unresponsive to wider social issues, and ignore the relationship between the dynamics of power, marginality, and knowledge.  Amid the expansion of the military-industrial complex and the carceral state, faculty, and students are expected to look away or inward, unresponsive to the language of imagined futures.

Killing Children, the Burdens of Conscience, and the Israel-Hamas War

Editor's Note
Other than occasional headlines about Biden cautioning Israel about being cautious of civilians, or that the Republicans are refusing the proposed combined aid package for Ukraine and Israel, and border security, the war in Gaza is receiving much less coverage. This is while civilian casualties rise and the humanitarian catastrophe explodes in Gaza.  Is this part of the presumed short attention span of the American public, or a deliberate attempt to move this war out of public concern? It can be hard to tell when the commercialization of the news ends and deliberate erasure begins. However, the result is the same – out of sight out of mind. People still believe that if something was really important it would be on the news. This is as true of the climate crisis, children still separated from their parents at the border, the war in Ukraine, or the growing disaster in Gaza.

A Day to Remember: How ‘Al-Quds Flood’ Altered the Relationship between Palestine and Israel Forever

Ramzy Baroud, PhD

Editor's Note
Dr. Baroud offers us important context into the ongoing conflict between Palestinians and Israel. As was noted by Hayes and Kaba at Truthout, “What Preceded the Killings in Israel and Gaza Was Not Peace …”. They argue it was apartheid, and most recently that is true. However, “apartheid” sounds so clean when it really is not. It is in the mechanisms for enforcing apartheid that brutality hides.
