The Sad Case of Momin Khawaja in Canada

Editor's Note
Mohammad Momin Khwaja is the son of Maboob Khawaja, and he has been a political prisoner in Canada and has now spent 21 years in prison. One has to wonder if Momin, like prisoners held without trial in GITMO, are considered by Canada and the U.S. to be potential terrorists simply because they have been held so long on trumped-up charges. In the case of Momin, who has been a model prisoner, his sentence was increased after 10-plus years in prison. The “war on terrorism” has transformed numerous times since Momin was first incarcerated. Most people have consigned it to a historical footnote, But for Momin and other prisoners, they are victims of a war that it seems will never end. It is fair to ask “Where is the Justice in this?”

War on Gaza and the Pedagogy of the Oppressed

Editor's Note
Though some may try, it is impossible to overlook the massive humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Southern Gaza, particularly Rafa, is now under bombing by Israel. The damage being done to buildings and infrastructure will take a decade or more to rebuild. But, who will pay for the rebuilding, and what will the dispaced do in the meantime?

Words of Wisdom from Sasha Baron Cohen (aka Borat)

In 2019, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) awarded Sasha Baron Cohen (the comedian, Borat) with their International Leadership Award. I feel like a slacker for missing this as his speech is both pertinent and profound in a wide array of areas. In it, he offers one of the most cogent and damning analyses of the internet giants and social media that I have heard or read. Just a brief excerpt to whet your interest:

“It is as if the age of reason, of evidential argument, is ending and now knowledge is increasingly delegitimized and scientific consensus is dismissed. Democracy which is based on shared truths is in retreat, and autocracy which depends on shared lies is on the march. Hate crimes are surging as are murderous attacks on religious and ethnic minorities. Now, what do all these dangerous trends have in common? ,,, All of this hate and violence is being facilitated by a handful of internet companies that amount to the greatest propaganda machine in history.”

I encourage you to take 25 minutes and listen to his presentation. Just leave it in the background as you eat lunch or surf the web. I believe you will come away with increased sensitivity to what is happening in our world, how it is being propagated, and with that understanding be better able to push back against it on multiple levels. ADL made an inspired choice in Cohen for its International Leadership Award. He should be invited to share on TED Talk, and should definitely get much broader opportunities to speak as himself, as well as perform as his character, Borat.

Editor's Note
We are truly a global community whether we want to be or not. It becomes increasingly difficult for people to remain ignorant of struggles and catastrophes happening everywhere. The commonalities of condition, who wins and who loses, who lives and who dies, who is oppressed and struggling to survive and who jets from mansion to palace and rubs elbows with those doing the same, become increasingly difficult to ignore. Dr. Khawaja is correct about the rising cries of the people, global humanity, for peace and justice.

Momin Khawaja – the forgotten Canadian detainee of 9/11

By Habib Siddiqui

Editor's Note
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a political prisoner is “someone who is put in prison for expressing disapproval of their own government, or for belonging to an organization, race, or social group not approved of by that government“. The United States has over 63 political prisoners (traditionally defined) in federal custody not counting those at Guantanamo or those immigrants being held in detention (Alliance for Global Justice), but that is a serious undercount in both the U.S. and Canada.
