Is NATO past its shelflife, or is it morphing into a longer-term working unit for a shifting cast of characters. The entrenched purpose of NATO is to protect member states politically and militarily. The question is “from whom?” That answer goes back to post WWII and the ensuing Cold War, but the footing certainly shifted post 9/11/2001 to include a global protectionism rather than just anti-Soviet/Russian protection (while that is obviously clearly a focus). The truth is that of NATO members, only the U.S. is “over militarized” and other member nations have forces more akin to peacekeepers rather than fighting forces.
