Peace or War: To be Optimistic or Pessimistic about the Future of Humanity

Is NATO past its shelflife, or is it morphing into a longer-term working unit for a shifting cast of characters. The entrenched purpose of NATO is to protect member states politically and militarily. The question is “from whom?” That answer goes back to post WWII and the ensuing Cold War, but the footing certainly shifted post 9/11/2001 to include a global protectionism rather than just anti-Soviet/Russian protection (while that is obviously clearly a focus). The truth is that of NATO members, only the U.S. is “over militarized” and other member nations have forces more akin to peacekeepers rather than fighting forces.

Global Peace and Conflict Management: How Ignorance and Wickedness Is Pushing Humanity Toward A Third World War

There is a saying that “nobody wins in war.” Well, that just isn’t true. While it is clear that civilians are big losers, and the environment is too, so are those creatures who cannot escape the brutalities of war – from squirrels and birds, to pets and those creatures captive in zoos. However, there are also those who benefit who are primarily faceless, even invisible. There are financiers and arms manufacturers, and increasingly there is a growing plethora of businesses providing everything from food services, to security, to intelligence. In part, it also depends on who is fighting. However, the most invisible of all are the companies that specialize in cleaning up and rebuilding a nation’s infrastructure from the ground up.

The war in Ukraine continues. Perhaps Ukraine is “winning” and perhaps not. I don’t think there will be a winner unless it is the U.S., or maybe NATO. No matter what happens, the people of Ukraine will have paid a terrible price.

Global Peace and Conflict Resolution Needs Leaders of Proactive Vision, Intelligence and Effective Communication

Unexploded bomb warning

By Mahboob Khawaja, PhD

The following essay is being republished after editing by the author. (8/25/22)
Editor's Note
The featured image warning of an unexploded bomb is from WWII. However, there are tens of thousands of unexploded bombs all over former and present battlefields, and they have no such markings. Every day they blow the hands, feet, and lives away – mostly of children. I suspect that many decades from now people will be losing limbs and lives from the “incompetent ordinance” of former conflicts. Yes. That is what the military calls these munitions that did not blow up as expected – “incompetent ordinance” – as if it is somehow the bomb or missile that is at fault. In that euphemism lies volumes about the torturous thinking that both hides and legitimates war.

The Clash of Leadership, Global Peace and Humanity at Crossroads

Editor's Note
What does “World War” mean, and is Dr. Mahboob correct in saying that the Russian war in Ukraine is at (or near) that scale? I would argue that the answer is ‘yes’. Not only that, it is very dangerous for people to think of this as a local conflict (and therefore “contained”).
