One response to the murder of George Floyd by Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020 was a cry to “defund the police”. “Defund” does not mean “abolish”, though many are calling for abolishing the police and rebuilding from the ground up. Starting with a total reconceptualizing of policing. “Defund” does mean redirecting some of the funding for police to other services that have fallen on police. This includes, for example, having psychiatric and houselessness responses. The largest treatment of people with psychiatric issues in the United States are local jails and holding facilities. This is shameful in a supposed advanced democratic society.

There is no doubt that we are in a time of incredible flux. The crises crash over us like an army of tsunamis. Looking forward, are we battered into oblivion, succumb to global dystopian fascism, or embrace the hard work of planting the seeds of hope, justice, and environmental sanity?
