Remember back to the crash of 2002 when Shrub, excuse me, George W. Bush was president? It was a bad time for so many as the dot.com bubble burst. Internet-related businesses were largely speculative and much of the wealth was nothing but the paper it was written on. As we scrambled out of that pit, Shrub was caught talking about the “jobless recovery” – meaning that the stock market was recovering (also not worth anything but sentiment), but job gains were lagging far behind stock gains. It was the first time (in my lifetime) where the gap between Wall Street and Main Street became so glaring. Since then the wellbeing of Wall Street has consistently superseded that of the people, including in our current pandemic crash.
