Editor's Note
I first started publishing the writings of Ramzy Baroud in 2007. We have had many interactions and I consider him a friend. So when he penned the following piece it struck my heart hard and I needed to sit with this pain that has so many ramifications. I wish I could reach across the miles and grasp the hand of my friend, to provide an earthly connection and pour my love and support into his heart. I know that nothing can heal this wound that cuts to the soul.

Dr. Baroud offers us important context into the ongoing conflict between Palestinians and Israel. As was noted by Hayes and Kaba at Truthout, “What Preceded the Killings in Israel and Gaza Was Not Peace …”. They argue it was apartheid, and most recently that is true. However, “apartheid” sounds so clean when it really is not. It is in the mechanisms for enforcing apartheid that brutality hides.

A ‘Terrorist Onslaught’? This is Why Netanyahu, Gallant Blame Iran for West Bank Violence

Editor's Note
It is critical that people in the US take heed of what is happening in Israel. This has always been true because of the massive amount of military, economic, and political support the US has given Israel, but also because we are currently mirroring each other politically. The US is deeply involved in the actions taken by the Israeli government and our failure to condemn their actions while continuing to provide support makes us accessories to the ongoing human rights catastrophe that is the hallmark of Israeli-Palestinian “relations”.

Asia’s ‘Strategic Autonomy’: How the New Era Could Shape Our Collective Identities

[Cartoon: China and Asia Pacific, Paresh Nath, The Khaleej Times]

In a recent speech, China’s highest-ranking diplomat, Wang Yi, spoke of a ‘united Asia’ and its need to develop a “strategic autonomy”. In principle, Wang was not wrong; after all, a stable and prosperous Asia would benefit the peoples of the region and would deny Western meddlers the chance to exploit historical fault lines and sow the seeds of political division.

Palestinians Are Not Liars: Confronting the Violence of Media Delegitimization

Making people invisible is not simply dehumanizing, it is a way to control everyone – not just those being silenced. It takes away the information about what is happening; it makes memory holes; important information is withheld from all. I have heard folks complain in the U.S. that there is no movement against one thing or another. The reality is that many things have happened at the local level across the country, but it is excluded from the national news. So, folks who are demonstrating, starting alternatives, or organizing, think they are among the few, and those on the sidelines think there is just no larger action because it is not reported.
