Trump’s increasingly vitriolic attacks against immigrants from the south, and calling for rounding up more than 11 million people for mass deportation should throw red flags for everyone, but has not lessened his popularity among his followers. His fear-mongering against immigrants is an effective recruiting tool if the polls are to be believed. Likewise, the lack of response to his increasingly open remarks that point to his desire to be a dictator, throw out the professional staff across whatever agencies he decides to keep and replace them with Trump loyalists. The fact that his direction is more like the conversion to Hitler’s Germany than upholding a democratic republic seems to not phase the almost 50% of voters who support him. As someone who has worked for most of my life to have the United States fulfill its promise of equality for all, this is heartbreaking.
